What are the cultural achievement of the ancient sumerians?
Sumerian Civilization: Mesopotamia is an ancient Greek name for what is now Iraq, and it was still in use about fifty years ago. Mesopotamia means 'land between two river'. The two river are the Tigris and Euphrates. Professor Breasted called Mesopotamia the Fertile Crescent, and this was the only area that is very fertile in the entire southwestern Asia. Southern Mesopotamia was called Summer in ancient times. The north-eastern part of summer was called Babylonia and Akkad. However, in Mesopotamia it was in Sumer that civilization dawned first. All this happened before 3000 BC.
a. Agriculture and Domestication of Animals: Is is not known wherefrom the early inhabitants of Sumer came. In all probability some nomadic people from neighbouring deserts poured into Sumer region. The clay soil of Sumer was very fertile. Here wheat and barely grew in a large amount due to fertile region. Besides, the settlements was surrounded by date-palm trees. Date-palm was an important item of food. Stock-breeding was also the other occupation of the Summerians.
b. Other Occupations: Before metals were used the people of Sumer used baked clay in making article of use . Sickles were made of the Baked clay. Later on pottery bacame an important occupation of sumerians. Glass making was popular with the sumerians. Besides, host of sumerians were angaged in metal working, weaving, etc.
